A Mirage is defined as an optical illusion that makes the appearance of water appear in a desert or hot road. Just as travelers in extreme heat move only with the urgency of getting away from it, immigrants often leave their homes driven by the same urgency to escape their conditions. However, what does it mean to reach a destination hoping for reprieve only to find nothing? These photos explore the similarities of traveling on a hot day to reasons people immigrate to other countries and what awaits them in these new lands.
This project focuses on Ceesay’s own family's migration history. Her great great great grandmother originally being from Nova Scotia and moving to Sierra Leone, only for her parents to move to Toronto in the early 2000s. How each time her family has left a place hoping for better and not necessarily finding it.
