Centerpiece depicts my relationship to television and how my west African upbringing shaped that relationship. Throughout the series, there are different images of television. They represent different periods in both my family and my own life. The first tv is a small box TV that my mom brought when she first moved to Canada. The last is our current tv, the contrast in size and scene shows how my family changed and grew as we have adapted to living here. This project plays on the idea of what the centerpiece of a home is. Furniture is often placed around a TV, as it is the centerpiece. However, in this project, the true centerpiece is my culture.
This photo series also uses colors and size to show nostalgia and highlight key memories. Earthy tones are used to represent home and my west African identity. The medium size photos are key memories from my childhood. As well, the largest photo is of our current TV. Once again playing on the idea that the TV is the centerpiece of a home.
